Humane Society International (HSI) embodies the international programs of The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), a charitable nonprofit organization founded in 1954 with a constituency of more than ten million people.
HSI oversees and coordinates the work of The HSUS abroad, addressing animal issues that cross many borders and impact millions of animals worldwide.
HSI works with national and jurisdictional governments, humane organizations, and individual animal protectionists in countries around the world to find practical, culturally sensitive, and long-term solutions to common animal issues, and to share an ethic of respect and compassion for all life.
With connections at the highest levels of international organizations and national governments, such as the
United Nations (UN), European Union (EU),
World Trade Organization (WTO) and the parliaments of Great Britain, Germany, and Australia, HSI works closely with policymakers, conducting briefings and helping to draft legislation, regulations, policy statements, international
treaties,
free trade agreements, and resolutions affecting animals.
Our efforts include:
* Developing
trade capacity building programs
* Helping to humanely control
companion animal populations
* Advocating the humane care, transport and slaughter for
farm animals
* Bringing veterinary care to companion and working animals
* Stemming the
illegal trade in wildlife
* Protecting endangered species and
marine mammals and their habitats
*
Educating children and adults and providing training for animal protection organizations and governmental and international agencies
* Influencing
international laws and policies to effect global change
* Conducting international
campaigns to reduce animal suffering caused by various activities
HSI supports programs in many countries around the world, and maintains offices in Asia, Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, the United Kingdom and the United States.
